Show Synopsis

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.

Character Breakdown

Stage Left is casting for the following roles. The role of Lenny Magrath and the role of Chick Boyle are cast.

  • Margaret “Meg” Magrath-Lead-late 20’s to early 40’s. The middle Magrath sister. Beautiful and charming, but emotionally distant. She has done her very best to forge a new life, fleeing her childhood home and its painful reminders of the past. After her mother’s suicide, Meg spent significant time looking at horrifying pictures to try and make herself a “stronger” person.
  • Rebecca “Babe” Botrelle (Nee Magrath)-Lead-Mid 20’s to Mid 30’s. The youngest Magrath sister. Always considered the prettiest and “most perfect” sister. Babe is an impulsive spitfire, a trait which pushes her over the edge.
  • Barnette Lloyd-Supporting-Mid 20’s to Mid 30’s. Babe’s lawyer. Fiercely intelligent, with a current of almost obsessive intensity that he struggles to keep under control.
  • Doc Porter-Supporting-Late 20’s to Early 40’s. Handsome and kind, Doc has a small limp and seems older than he actually is.
